Collection includes: letter book (July 1852-Nov. 1854) primarily in English but also French, containing copies of correspondence from Cowdin in Paris to merchants in France and the United States, many pertaining to the export of fancy ribbons and daguerreotype plates, plus invoices of merchandise shipped to Wm. H. Mann & Co., Boston (267 p. + loose sheets); invoice book (June 1856-July 1857) listing merchandise shipped from France to the U.S. by Elliot C. Cowdin & Co. (278 p.); Cowdin's commonplace book (undated) of anecdotes, quotations, stories, etc. possibly for use in speeches (ca. 110 p.); two small notebooks probably belonging to someone in the Cowdin family, one listing some businesses in France as well as notes on American politics in the Civil War era has the name C.C. Schmitt written inside the cover (ca. 1864), the other lists purchases made in France (1903).

Born in Jamaica Vermont. Entered business in Boston during the 1840's, where he mastered the intricacies of silk trade. In the 1850's, he established his own firm in New York York City with a branch in Paris, and lived alternately in one place or the other. He married Sarah Kate Waldron, circa 1853.
